Acho que o Miguel tem razão. Isto não parece ser algo relacionado com software. Não tem windows? nunca teve? Ele alguma vez funcionou?

Caso experimente outro Sistema Operativo e se mesmo assim não funcionar... Das duas, uma. Ou é a BIOS que tem a comunicação da unidade de CD/DVD desactivada (procure por CD/DVD unit, ou drive, ou até mesmo o nome da marca e modelo da unidade de leitura na BIOS e veja se essa tem Enable escrito) ou então algo que o Miguel sugere, mas na minha opinião, se consegue inserir um DVD, se o ouvir a girar, em princípio a alimentação poderá estar boa, mas a comunicação é que poderá ter problemas. Caso, tenha visto na BIOS e tenha encontrado uma opção que lhe permita abrir activar o leitor (isto poderá não estar presente em todas as BIOS, depende do Fabricante da Motherboard) e o problema persistir, então o problema poderá estar no cabo que efectua a comunicação: PC <> CD/DVD.

Aqui o caso muda de figura, pois será um problema de hardware que se pode situar num:
  • Problema da Motherboard -- ou seja, o controlador não está a conseguir estabelecer ligação à porta à qual está ligada a unidade óptica;
  • Cabo danificado -- basta uma dobra para haver o risco de dano, a sua substituição resolveria facilmente a questão;
  • Controlador danificado na unidade óptica -- daí o Sistema Operativo não a conseguir listar, pois não sabe sequer que esta está ligada e muito menos ver a informação da Marca/Modelo.

Como dito anteriormente, dei uma verificada em minhas conexões de placa-mãe, troquei a conexão do cabo por outro slot, e foi reconhecido o drive exercendo em sua plenitude suas funções;

Também estou enfrentando um problema semelhante, Miguel.
Sou novo no Linux e, igualmente, o meu Ubuntu 12.10 não reconhece o DVD-Rom, que facilmente é acessado pelos Windows XP e 7 instalados no mesmo SD da máquina (Infelizmente ainda dependo de alguns programas que só rodam em Microsoft...).
Meu laptop não possui unidade floppy. Apenas entradas USB e Card.
Abri o terminal e digitei:

sudo gedit /etc/fstab

Obtendo como resposta (fstab):

Tem como me ajudar?
Penso que talvez seja devido um passo em falso que dei durante a instalação.
Como não conseguia atualizar automaticamente para a versão 13.04 (dava erro), conclui que era por ter subdividido o espaço no hd destinado ao Ubuntu em 3 (Área de Troca, Sistema e Home), por isso desfiz as partições, e reinstalei na área total. Mas quando foi solicitada um espaço swap, optei por um que constava como "desconhecido" pelo GParted.
Terei sido meu próprio algoz? Estou sofrendo por um crime que cometi?

Agradeço pela atenção que puder me dispensar, amigo.

Olá Franse,

Antes de mais, não há qualquer problema em ser muitos conteúdos, afinal fui eu que os pedi xD Apenas editei o seu post pondo todos esses códigos dentro da tag [ code ]. Assim os conteúdos ficaram dentro desta caixa. Espero que não haja problema em eu ter editado o seu post e espero que futuramente se voltar a pôr códigos use esta tag, pois fica mais limpo, pelo menos eu acho :D

Você tem dois CD-ROMs? É que pelo menos o sistema diz que você pode montar um CD-ROM na "posição" (vamos chamar-lhe assim) sr0 e outro na sr1.

Por isso como primeira aproximação ao problema vamos ver o que acontece se você executar o comando seguinte:
sudo mount /dev/sr0 /media/cdrom0


Ele retorna algum erro?
